A Great Escape

Ever since I was a small child, I have had a fascination with horror movies. I remember watching previews for movies that looked so good but would be disappointed because they had an “R” rating and I knew I was a kid and couldn’t go see them. I remember loving watching Dracula movies and even seeing movies where people got their heads chopped off! For some reason I was more fascinated than scared. This made my Mother think something was wrong with me but it was just an interest of mine that developed early.

As I got older, my interest never waned. I remember being 14 years old and being allowed to watch my first “R” movie which was “Friday the 13th: Part II.” I loved every minute of it and felt so adult being allowed to finally watch an “R” movie! There was something so thrilling, so exciting to go to the theater to watch a scary movie and never knowing when something was going to jump out or a loud sound would startle you. Horror movies became one of my ways to cope. It took my mind of things, an esacpe from my own reality into another one.

I remember when I moved in High school and I had no friends at first. My favorite thing to do was to go to the Video store and rent some VHS movies to watch (yes I am aging myself!). Because when I watched a horror movie, it was like nothing else mattered. It totally sucked me in and I stayed focused on the movie. It put my life in perspective, as bad as things could be at time at least I wasn’t running from a crazed killer with a knife! That seemed much scarier and horrific than anything I might be dealing with!

Everyone is an individual. Finding some kind of escape is a good way to relieve stress and can help you take a break from your problems. I find myself in such a happier mood after I get to engage in horror. I’m happy to have found it! If you aren’t sure what your escape is, then its time to experiment. Try new things, you never know what your passion may be. The break it can give you can be a wonderful coping skill to use the rest of your life.
